ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overseas Taiwanese

Okay, imagine you and your family live in a big house in a town called Taiwan. But then maybe your mommy or daddy gets a really cool job offer in another country, like America or Canada. So, your family decides to move there and live in a new house. When you move to this new place, you might miss your old house and your friends in Taiwan, right? That's what it's like for some people who are overseas Taiwanese.

Overseas Taiwanese are people who are originally from Taiwan but now living in other countries. They might have moved to these countries for work or school, or maybe they were born there because their parents were from Taiwan. Even though they live somewhere else, they still feel a strong connection to Taiwan, kind of like how you might feel about your old house and friends.

Sometimes, overseas Taiwanese might get together with other people from Taiwan who also live in the same country. They might celebrate traditional holidays like Chinese New Year or eat Taiwanese food together. They might also try to keep up with what is happening in Taiwan by watching news or talking to relatives who still live there.

Being an overseas Taiwanese can be both exciting and challenging. You get to experience a new place and meet new people, but you also might miss your old home and friends. But as long as you stay connected to your roots and culture, you can have the best of both worlds!
