ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pair gain system

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a big toy box full of different types of toys, like balls, dolls, cars, and puzzles. Now, imagine that all your friends who live far away also have toy boxes with lots of toys, but they want to play with the toys in your toy box. How can they do that without coming all the way to your house?

Well, just like your toy box has different types of toys, telephone cables have different types of signals that can be sent through them. Some signals are good for talking on the phone, some are good for sending data like emails or videos, and some are good for sending messages back and forth between computers. But, sometimes there's a problem - not enough cables to send all the signals!

That's where the pair gain system comes in. Imagine that the different types of signals are like different colors of marbles. Some marbles are really big and can take up a lot of room, while others are smaller and don't need as much space. By putting the marbles into pairs, we can fit more of them into the telephone cable without everything getting too crowded.

So, the pair gain system is like a toy box organizer, but for telephone cables. It helps to fit more signals into the same space, so that your friends can talk to you on the phone or use the internet, even if they live far away!
