Paleo-Balkan languages

Hi there! Do you know what languages are? They are like secret codes that people use to communicate with each other. A long long time ago, before you were born, people in a place called the Balkans (which is in Europe) spoke some special secret codes that we call paleo-Balkan languages. These were languages that were spoken a really really long time ago, before people started writing things down.

Now, different parts of the Balkans had different secret codes. Imagine if you and your friends made up your own secret code with special words that no one else could understand. That's what the people in the Balkans did a long time ago. There were lots of different codes, but some of the main ones were called Illyrian, Thracian, and Dacian.

But here's the thing - because these languages were spoken so long ago, we don't have many things written down in them, and we don't have anyone who speaks them today. It's like a really really old secret code that no one knows how to use anymore. But even though these languages aren't spoken anymore, we still know a lot about them from things like ancient monuments and inscriptions, which help us to understand how the people who spoke those secret codes lived a long time ago.
