Palette knife

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a painting before? When someone paints, they usually use a brush to put the paint on the canvas. But sometimes, artists use a different tool called a palette knife.

A palette knife looks like a little spatula with a handle. You know how you use a spatula to spread butter or jam on bread? Well, a palette knife is kind of like that, but for painting.

Instead of dipping the tip into a big blob of paint, like you would with a brush, an artist uses the flat, angled edge of the palette knife to scoop up a little bit of paint from a palette (which is like a little tray that holds the paint).

Then, using the sharp edge of the palette knife, the artist can smear or scrape the paint onto the canvas. They can make cool textures and layers by dragging the knife across the canvas in different directions.

Palette knives are good for making bold, chunky strokes of color, or for mixing different colors on the palette. Some artists even use really big palette knives to make giant paintings with thick, raised surfaces that stick out from the canvas!
