ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pandering (politics)

Okay little one, let me explain what "pandering" means when it comes to politics.

So, when someone is running for office, like a president or a senator, they want to get as many people to vote for them as possible. And one way they do this is by trying to appeal to certain groups of people.

For example, let's say a politician wants to get the votes of people who really like dogs. So, they might say things like "I love dogs too! I have three of them at home!" even if they don't really care about dogs that much.

This is called "pandering" - when a politician says or does things just to make people like them, even if they don't really mean it.

It's like if you wanted someone to be your friend, so you pretended to like the same things they do, even if you don't really like those things. It's not always the most honest thing to do, but some politicians think it's necessary to win votes.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
