ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Papal appointment

Okay kiddo, so you know about the Pope, right? He's like the leader of the Catholic Church. A long, long time ago, the people who became Popes were chosen by other important people in the church. But now, it's a bit different.

When a Pope dies, the cardinals (these are special church leaders who help the Pope) get together to elect a new Pope. They meet in the Vatican in Italy and they're locked in a room until they make a decision.

First, they say prayers and they ask the Holy Spirit (which is like a really special spirit that represents God) to help them pick the right person to be the new Pope. Then, they vote. If someone gets two-thirds of the votes, they become the new Pope!

Once they pick someone, they announce their choice to the world by shouting "Habemus Papam!" (that's a Latin phrase for "We have a Pope!"). Then, the new Pope comes out onto the balcony of the Vatican so everyone can see him and he gives his first speech as the leader of the Catholic Church.

So, that's how the Pope gets picked. It's kind of like the election of a really important leader of a club that has millions of members around the world!
