ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Paper Towns (film)

Okay kiddo, so have you ever heard of a thing called a “paper town”? No? Well, it’s a fake town that cartographers (those are people who make maps) sometimes put on their maps to make sure that no one else copies their work. They’ll put in random streets and buildings that don’t actually exist, and if they spot that exact town on someone else’s map, they’ll know it was copied! Clever, huh?

Now, in the movie called “Paper Towns,” a teenager named Quentin (or “Q” for short) is in love with his next-door neighbor, Margo. One night, she comes to his window to ask him to help her play tricks on people who have wronged her, like her ex-boyfriend and her friends. They prank these people all night and have a great time together. But then, Margo suddenly disappears, and Q is left trying to figure out where she went.

He finds a clue that leads him to believe that Margo might be hiding out in a paper town in New York. So, he and his friends go on a road trip to try to find her. Along the way, they encounter a lot of obstacles and learn a lot about themselves and each other.

Eventually, they do find Margo, but they realize that she’s not the perfect person they all thought she was. Margo explains that she ran away because she was tired of being the person everyone expected her to be. She wanted to escape “her” and find a new “her.” She had created a fictional version of herself, just like cartographers create fake towns, and ran away to that “paper town” to start fresh.

So, the message of the movie is that everyone has their own “paper towns” or fake versions of themselves that they hide behind, but it’s important to accept who we really are and not be afraid to be ourselves.
