ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Parabolic antenna

A parabolic antenna is like a big dish that can help us listen to or talk with things that are far away, like satellites or other planets. It's made of a curved surface, kind of like a bowl, that's shiny and very smooth.

When we want to use the antenna to talk with something, we use a special device called a transmitter to send a signal. This signal is like a message, but it's sent through the air instead of with words.

The parabolic antenna then has the job of catching this signal, which bounces off its shiny surface and gets focused towards a point in the middle. This point is called the "focal point," and it's where we put a little device called a receiver.

The receiver is like a really good listener. It can hear the signal that the transmitter sent, even though it's very far away. This is because the parabolic antenna helps to make the signal stronger and more clear, like using a magnifying glass to make something look bigger.

So with the help of the parabolic antenna, we can talk with things that are very far away, and hear their messages loud and clear!
