ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Parametricism

Okay little one, have you ever built with blocks or played with Legos? Parametricism is kind of like that, but with digital tools!

Imagine building a house out of blocks. You have a certain number of blocks, and you can only build with those blocks. But what if you had a special magic power that allowed you to change the shape, size, and color of the blocks with just a few clicks? And what if the blocks were connected to each other, so that when you changed one block, all the others would automatically adjust to fit with it?

That's kind of like what parametricism is. It's a way of designing things, like buildings or cars or furniture, using digital tools that let you change the parameters (like size, shape, and materials) and have the design automatically adjust to fit those changes. It's a bit like a computer program that can generate different variations based on the input you give it.

This makes it easier to create complex designs that would be very difficult to do by hand. It also allows designers to experiment with different ideas and see how they would look in 3D, without having to build physical models.

But parametricism isn't just about designing cool-looking things. It can also help make buildings and other structures more efficient, by optimizing things like energy use, ventilation, and natural light. And because parametric designs can be easily customized and adapted to different contexts, it can help create more sustainable and resilient architecture that responds to the needs and preferences of the people who use it.

So that's parametricism in a nutshell: it's like playing with Legos on a computer, but with some very powerful magic thrown in!
