ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Parasomnia

Parasomnia is when people do some strange things while they sleep. When we sleep, we're supposed to be so deep in it that we don't do anything. But sometimes when people are asleep, they might walk around or sit up in bed, talk or shout, or even do things that don't make sense like try to open a window that's already open or take their shoes off and put them back on again.

Parasomnia happens because sometimes the part of your brain that controls your body movements might not fully go to sleep when you fall asleep. This can cause you to do things without really knowing or remembering that you did them. So if someone tells you they woke up and found themselves in a different part of the house or doing something strange, they might have been experiencing parasomnia.

It's important to know that parasomnia is not something you can control or choose to do. It happens automatically when your brain doesn't behave like it's supposed to while you're sleeping. If you or someone you know has parasomnia, it's important to talk to a doctor about it so they can help figure out what causes it and how to treat it.
