This solution makes the metal all rough and bumpy on the surface, but that's good because it helps the metal hold onto oil or paint better so it won't rust.

After the metal has been in the solution for a while, they take it out and wash it off with water. Then they might put it in another solution that has oil or wax in it, so the metal stays really slippery and won't rust.
