ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Password policy

Okay kiddo, do you remember how we lock our house with a key so that no one can enter our house without permission? Similarly, when we use a computer or any online account, we also need to set a key which is called a password to protect our account from bad guys who may try to steal our information or do harmful things with it.

Now, to make sure that your password is strong and not easy for the bad guys to guess, there are some rules that you need to follow. These rules are called password policies.

For example, a good password policy may say that your password needs to be at least 8 characters long, include a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like **&^%$#@!. This type of password is hard to guess and it will be difficult for bad guys to break into your account.

But, some people might be lazy and use simple passwords like “123456” or “password,” which is very easy for the bad guys to guess, so a password policy can also make sure you’re not using such simple passwords that are easy to guess.

So, that’s what password policy means, it’s just like a set of rules to help you create a strong and unique password that will keep your account secure.
