ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pathos

Pathos is a big word that means making people feel certain emotions like sadness, happiness, or fear. Think about when you watch a movie and you start to cry when a character dies or feel happy when the main character overcomes a difficult problem. That's because the movie is using pathos to make you feel those emotions.

When someone is trying to persuade you to believe something or do something, they might use pathos to make you feel a certain way about the idea. For example, if someone wants you to donate money to a charity for children who are sick, they might tell you a really sad story about a sick kid who needs your help. This story will make you feel sad and want to help the sick kid, which is the whole point of using pathos.

Pathos is a powerful tool that people can use to connect with other people and make them feel a certain way about things. So, the next time you watch a movie or someone is trying to convince you to do something, think about how the story or argument makes you feel and try to notice if they are using pathos.
