ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pathotype

A pathotype is like a group of bad guys who all look different but act in the same way. Think of them like the villains in a superhero movie. Sometimes, scientists study these bad guys and give them different names based on how they act or what they do.

In a way, pathotypes are like different versions of a bad guy. Just like there can be different types of supervillains with different powers, there can be different pathotypes of a disease that all have different ways of making people or plants sick.

Scientists use these pathotype names to help understand and fight these bad guys. By studying the different pathotypes of a disease, they can figure out what makes each one different and how to stop them from causing harm. So, it’s a way to help keep us safe from the bad guys!
