ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Trinomen

A trinomen is a fancy word for a way to give a name to a living thing, like a plant or an animal. It has three parts, just like how your name has a first name, a middle name, and a last name.

The first part of the trinomen is the genus, which is like a big family group. It’s like saying all cats belong to the same genus, and all dogs belong to a different one.

The second part is the species, which is a more specific way to group living things. It’s like saying a Siamese cat is a different species from a Persian cat, even though they are both cats.

Finally, the third part is the subspecies, which is an even more specific way to group living things. It’s like saying a certain kind of Siamese cat is a different subspecies than a different kind of Siamese cat.

So when you see a name like Felis catus domesticus, that’s the trinomen for a domestic cat. The genus is Felis, the species is catus, and the subspecies is domesticus. It’s just a way to help scientists and others keep track of all the different kinds of living things.
