ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Patient-reported outcome

A patient-reported outcome is when a patient tells their doctor or healthcare provider how they feel about their health and their treatment. It's like when a kid tells their mom or dad how they are feeling when they're sick. The doctor or healthcare provider wants to know how the patient is feeling so they can do a better job of helping them feel better.

The doctor might ask the patient questions like "Do you have any pain?" or "Are you feeling tired?" and the patient would answer honestly. The doctor might also give the patient a questionnaire to fill out that asks more specific questions about their symptoms and how well they are able to do things like walk, sleep, or eat.

The patient's answers help the doctor and healthcare provider understand how the patient is doing and if the treatment they are giving them is working. It's important for the patient to be honest and open, so the doctor can make the best decisions for their health.
