ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Paul Wolfskehl

Paul Wolfskehl was a man who lived a long time ago who really liked math. He wanted to try to solve a puzzle called Fermat's Last Theorem that had been bugging him for a while. Fermat was another man who really liked math and came up with a puzzle that said that there are no whole number solutions to an equation with exponents of 3 or more. Basically, this means that you can't find three whole numbers (like 1, 2, and 3) that when you add them together cubed (raised to the third power), it equals some other whole number cubed.

Paul Wolfskehl worked really hard on this puzzle for a really long time, but he couldn't figure it out. He even offered a lot of money to anyone who could solve it! But no one could solve it for a really, really long time.

Finally, a man named Andrew Wiles solved the puzzle in 1995! He used a lot of really hard math to solve it, and it took him a super long time. But he did it and won the prize money! We still remember Paul Wolfskehl for being so interested in math and for creating the puzzle that was finally solved after so many years.
