ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pawnbroker

Okay kiddo, let me explain to you what a pawnbroker is.

Sometimes when people need money urgently, they can't wait to get a loan from a bank. In such a case, they can go to a pawnbroker who is someone that gives out loans to people in exchange for valuable items such as jewelry, electronics, or precious possessions.

The pawnbroker will keep the item as collateral, which means if the borrower doesn't pay back the loan plus interest on time, the pawnbroker can sell the item to make up for the money loaned.

Let me give you an example to help you understand better. Say you need $50 for new toys, but your parents don't have it right now. You can take your toy car to the pawnbroker, and the pawnbroker will lend you $50. They keep your toy car until you repay the loan plus interest. If you can't pay, then the pawnbroker can sell your toy car to recover the money.

That's what a pawnbroker does, and it's important to remember that while they can help when you need money fast, you need to be careful and only borrow what you can pay back on time.
