Penal colony

A penal colony is a place where people who have committed crimes are sent to live. It is like a jail, but usually the people who live there are working on the land or doing other types of work, instead of being confined in cells all day. In some places, the people in the penal colony may even be given the chance to earn money for their work. This can help them when they leave the colony and have to start a new life.
