ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Penstock

A penstock is like a giant straw. Imagine when you drink milkshake with a straw. The straw helps bring the milkshake from the cup to your mouth. Similarly, a penstock helps bring water from a high place, like a mountain, to a low place, like a power plant.

The penstock is a big pipe made of strong materials like metal or concrete. It is very durable and has to be able to hold a lot of water pressure. The water travels down the penstock because of gravity, just like milkshake travels down the straw because you are sucking on it. When the water reaches the power plant, it's called hydroelectric energy. This energy is used to make electricity.

So, a penstock is a really big pipe that helps move water from high places to low places, like power plants, where that water can be used to create energy.
