ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Periodic law

The periodic law is like a big puzzle of all the elements in the world. These elements are the building blocks of everything around us like the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Scientists study these elements and put them in order based on how heavy they are and how they behave.

Imagine you have a bunch of toys that you want to put in order. You might put all the toy cars together, then all the stuffed animals, then all the LEGOs. Scientists do this same thing with elements, except they put them in order based on something called the “atomic number”.

The atomic number is like each element's address. Each element has its own unique atomic number that tells scientists where it belongs in the puzzle. And they’ve discovered something amazing! When they put the elements in order by atomic number, they noticed a pattern repeating itself over and over again.

This pattern is called the periodic law. It’s like if you had a favorite toy and it popped up every few spots in your toy line-up. So, these scientists discovered this pattern and decided to create a chart called the “Periodic Table of Elements” to help keep track of all the different elements.

The Periodic Table has all the elements in order by their atomic number, and it’s like having a handy dandy roadmap to the building blocks of everything around us. Thanks to the periodic law and the periodic table, scientists can better understand how the elements work, and how we can use them to make new things! Pretty cool, huh?
