Peripheral nervous system

The peripheral nervous system is like a bunch of wires that help your brain talk to the rest of your body. Just like when you use a phone, your voice travels through the wires to the person on the other end, your brain sends signals through the peripheral nervous system to tell your arms and legs what to do.

There are two parts to the peripheral nervous system, the somatic and the autonomic nervous systems. The somatic nervous system is in charge of things you can control, like moving your muscles to walk or pick up a toy. The autonomic nervous system controls things you can't control, like your heartbeat and breathing.

The peripheral nervous system also has two different kinds of wires: sensory and motor nerves. Sensory nerves carry information from your body to your brain, like when you touch something hot, your sensory nerve sends a message to your brain to let you know it's hot. Motor nerves carry messages from your brain to your muscles so you can do things like run, jump, and play.

Overall, the peripheral nervous system helps you move, feel, and regulate the functions of your body by carrying messages between your brain and the rest of your body.
