ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Permille

Per mille (permille) is a way of measuring how much of something is in a liquid or gas. It is like a percentage, but instead of out of 100, it is out of 1,000. That means that if you have 1,000 parts of a liquid or gas, and you want to measure how much of one thing is in it, you use permille.

Think of it like a cake. If you have a cake that is sliced into 1,000 pieces, and you want to know how many pieces have chocolate chips in them, you would use permille to figure it out. If 5 of those pieces had chocolate chips, you would say that the cake has 5 permille of chocolate chips.

Permille is used to measure things like alcohol in drinks or pollutants in the air. For example, if a drink has 5 permille of alcohol, that means that for every 1,000 parts of the drink, 5 parts are alcohol.

Overall, permille is just a fancy way of measuring how much of something is in a liquid or gas, and it is used in many different industries to help us understand what we are consuming or breathing in.
