ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Permineralization

Permineralization is like giving a tree a sweater. Sometimes, when a tree dies, it can't just disappear into thin air. Instead, the tree can stay in one place for a really long time, maybe even millions of years. When this happens, minerals from the ground can slowly seep into the tree and fill up all the spaces inside. It's like the tree is getting a jacket made of minerals, keeping it warm and strong!

Now, when scientists find these trees that have been permineralized, it's like they found a fossil. They can look inside the tree and see what it used to look like a long time ago. Scientists can even figure out what kind of environment the tree lived in and what other animals were around at the time. Permineralization is like a time machine that shows us things that happened way back when!
