ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Peshat

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have a puzzle with a picture on it. The picture is like a story that you are trying to figure out. Now, the puzzle is made up of different pieces that fit together to make the whole picture.

In the same way, a story in the Jewish scripture (called the Torah) is like a puzzle. People have been trying to figure out what the story means for a long time. One way people have tried to understand the story is by using different pieces of information to put together what they think is the most simple and straightforward understanding of the story. This is called "peshat."

So, "peshat" is like taking all the puzzle pieces and putting them together to make a simple and easy-to-understand picture. It's just one way of trying to understand a story.
