ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pharmacy benefit management

Okay, imagine you really like candy. Your parent tells you that you can only have one piece of candy every day, so you ask them to hold onto your candy jar and give you one piece each day. That's kind of like what a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) does.

They work with your doctor and your parent's insurance company to make sure you get the medicine you need when you need it, but not more than you need.

Just like your parent checks which candies are in the jar to make sure you don't get more than one per day, a PBM checks which medicines you're taking to make sure you're not getting too much or too little.

They also make sure the medicine is the right one for your condition, and that the pharmacy your parent goes to is giving you the right amount and the right kind of medicine.

Overall, a PBM helps keep track of your medicine and makes sure you stay healthy, just like a parent looks out for you to make sure you don't eat too much candy!
