ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Philosophy and literature

Philosophy is a big word that means thinking really, really hard about really big and important questions, like why we are here and what is the meaning of life. Philosophers are people who do this thinking and try to come up with answers to these questions.

Literature is another big word that means the stories and books that people write. They can be fun stories about adventures or scary stories about monsters, but they can also be serious and talk about big important ideas like life and death.

When philosophy and literature come together, it means that someone has written a story or book that is trying to answer some of these big and important questions. For example, in a book like Harry Potter, the author, J.K. Rowling, might be trying to answer questions about good and evil, or the importance of love and friendship.

Sometimes, philosophers will also write stories or books themselves to try and explain their ideas. Like when Plato wrote a book called The Republic, where he imagined an ideal society where everyone was equal and worked together for the good of everyone.

So, when you read a book that makes you think about big questions, like "what is the meaning of life?" or "what makes something right or wrong?", then you are reading something that is combining philosophy and literature.
