ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Literary translation

Okay, so you know how sometimes you read a story in your book and it’s in one language, but you wish you could read it in another language that you know better? Well, that’s where a literary translator comes in!

A literary translator is like a language wizard who takes a story written in one language and makes it into a story that you can read in another language. But it's not as easy as just changing the words from one language to another!

When a literary translator works on a story, they have to be really careful to make sure that the meaning and feeling of the original story stays the same. They have to choose the right words, phrases and sentences to use in the new language, so that the story still makes sense and feels just as exciting, funny, or scary as it did before.

Sometimes, there are even things in the original language that don’t have a direct translation in the new language, like jokes, slang or cultural references. In those cases, the translator has to be creative and come up with a new way to express those things in the new language that still feels like it belongs in the story.

So, in short, a literary translator is a super-smart person who helps you read your favorite stories in your favorite language, while keeping the magic of the original story alive. Cool huh?
