Phong shading is a way of making 3D computer images look more realistic. It's done by changing the color of each pixel (the dots that make up an image) depending on the angle from which the light is shining. For example, if the light is coming from above, the top of the 3D object will be brighter, and the bottom will be darker. This gives the 3D object a more realistic look, as it would in real life.
