ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Photographic processes

Photographic processes are ways to capture and create pictures using light. You know how you draw pictures with crayons and markers, well instead of making pictures by drawing, we use a special camera to take pictures.

When you take a picture with a camera, it works by letting light in through a lens onto a special material called film or a digital sensor. The light makes an image of what you are taking a picture of on the film or sensor.

Now, there are many ways to create pictures using light. One way is called "analog photography", which is when we use film to make pictures. Film is a special material that has chemicals on it that react with light to make an image. So, when we take a picture using film, the light that hits the film makes a hidden image that we can't see yet. We then take the film and develop it using special chemicals that make the hidden image appear, kind of like magic!

Another way to create pictures using light is called "digital photography". This is when we use a special type of camera that captures the light and turns it into digital information - this is what's happening when you take a picture on your phone! The camera takes the light and turns it into numbers that create an image that we can see on a screen.

So, there are many different photographic processes that we use to create pictures using light. Whether we use film or digital methods, the goal is the same - to capture and create amazing pictures that we can enjoy!
