ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pie rule

The pie rule is a way to make sure that two people have an even chance in a game, like checkers or chess. Imagine you have a yummy pie, and you want to share it with your friend. But you're not sure how to divide it fairly. Here's how the pie rule works:

1. First, you cut the pie in half. One half is for you, and one half is for your friend.

2. Next, your friend gets to choose which half they want. If they pick the half with more pie in it, they might have an advantage in the game. But if they pick the half with less pie, they might be at a disadvantage.

3. To make sure things are fair, you get to choose which color pieces you want to play with in the game. If you pick the stronger color, your friend might have an advantage with the extra pie. But if you pick the weaker color, you might be at a disadvantage.

By using the pie rule, you and your friend both get to make choices that balance out the game. You get a fair share of the pie, and a fair chance to win the game. Yum!
