ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pied-à-terre

A pied-à-terre is a fancy way of saying “a second home.” It’s a French phrase that means “foot on the ground” because it’s a place where you can rest your feet when you’re away from your main home.

Let's think of it this way - you know how you have a room at your house that you use to play and hang out in? Well, some people have two homes they can play and hang out in. One is their main home where they sleep in their bed every night and the other one is their pied-à-terre.

People use their pied-à-terre when they need a quick place to stay in another location, like if they have a meeting in the city or if they want a little vacation somewhere. It’s like having a mini-house that you can go to when you need a change of scenery.

So, a pied-à-terre is really just a fancy term for having a second home that you use for short stays.
