ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pierre Bouguer

Pierre Bouguer was a man who lived a very long time ago and was very interested in how light works. He figured out that when sunlight or any other kind of light goes through something like water or air, it can bend or change direction. This can make things look different than they really are!

He also noticed that when light goes through a thick object, like a really big piece of glass or crystal, some of the light gets absorbed, or disappears, while the rest of the light gets through. This is important because it helps us understand how much light we can actually see and use.

Pierre Bouguer made a special tool called a photometer to measure how much light was being absorbed by different materials. This helped scientists figure out how to make better lenses, telescopes, and microscopes that could see things really close up.

So, basically, Pierre Bouguer was a smart person who helped us learn more about how light works, and that helped us make better tools to see things up close!
