ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pitching moment

Imagine you are spinning around like a top. When you tilt your body to one side, your body wants to move in that direction. This is what we call a "pitching moment" in the world of airplanes.

In an airplane, the pitching moment is the force that makes the plane want to tilt its nose up or down. When the pilot moves the control stick, they are changing the angle of the wings which creates more or less lift. This change in lift creates a pitching moment that makes the plane either go up or down.

Just like how you can control your spinning by leaning to one side or the other, the pilot can control the pitch of the airplane using the control stick. If they want to climb, they push the stick forward to create more lift and a pitch up moment. If they want to descend, they pull the stick back to decrease lift and create a pitch down moment.

So basically, a pitching moment is the force that makes an airplane tilt up or down, and the pilot can control this with their control stick to make the plane climb or descend.
