ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Plame affair

Okay kiddo, let me explain what the Plame Affair is all about.

There was a lady named Valerie Plame. She worked for the United States government in a very important position as a spy. That means she would gather secret information about other countries and give it to the government so they could make decisions to keep our country safe.

One day, Valerie's husband, Joe Wilson, went on TV and said that the government was wrong about a really important issue. He said they were lying to everyone. The government didn't like that very much and they wanted to make him look like he was wrong. So they told some newspapers that Valerie was a spy working for the government.

Now, this was a big problem because it put Valerie's life in danger. Other countries could find out that she was a spy and they could try to hurt her or her family. It was also illegal for the government to reveal her name because it could hurt national security.

So, the government started an investigation to find out who leaked Valerie's name. A man named Scooter Libby was found guilty of lying to the investigators about what he knew. Some people think that he was protecting other people who were involved in the leak.

Overall, it was a big mess and showed how important it is to protect our spies and keep national security secrets safe.
