ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Plant stem

Okay, so you know how plants have a body, like we do? But instead of bones, plants have something called a stem. The stem is like the trunk of a tree, it's the big part that holds everything up.

But the stem does more than just hold the plant up. It also helps move things around. You know how cars need fuel to run? Well, plants need water and nutrients to grow. The stem helps bring these things from the roots to the rest of the plant. That's why the stem is sometimes called the plant's "pipeline."

But not all stems are the same. Some plants have thick, woody stems that look like trees, while others have thin, bendy stems that creep along the ground like ivy. Some stems have prickly thorns for protection, while others have soft, fuzzy hairs.

One of the coolest things about stems is that they can do something called "photosynthesis." That's a big word that means they can make their own food using sunlight. Some stems are even green, like leaves, because they're doing photosynthesis.

So there you have it, a plant stem is like a trunk that holds the plant up and brings water and nutrients to the rest of the plant, and it can also do photosynthesis in some cases.
