Poi (food)

Poi is mashed up sticky stuff that comes from a very special plant called taro. Taros grow in the ground, and when they are harvested they look like big brownish roots.

To make poi, you take the taro and cook it in water until it's soft. Then you peel off the brown skin and mash the white inside with water until it's really smooth and gloopy.

People in Hawaii love to eat poi! They use their fingers to eat it and they dip it into other yummy foods like fish or meat. Poi is very nutritious because taros have lots of vitamins and minerals.

Some people say that poi tastes like sourdough bread or mashed potatoes, but you should give it a try and decide for yourself!
