ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Point-to-point (telecommunications)

When you and your friend want to talk to each other, you can either shout across the room or use a telephone. When you use a telephone, you are talking point-to-point. This means that when you speak, your voice goes through the telephone line directly to your friend's phone. This is different from shouting across the room because when you shout, everyone in the room can hear you, but with a telephone, only your friend can hear you.

In the same way, telecommunications works by sending messages from one point to another point. This means that when you send a message, it goes directly from your device to the other person's device. This is a faster way to communicate because you don't have to rely on someone else to pass the message along.

This type of communication can be done in different ways. For example, you can use a telephone, a computer, or a satellite to send messages. No matter what device you use, the important thing is that you are sending the message directly to the other person's device, which is what makes it a point-to-point communication.

In summary, point-to-point communication is like having a private conversation with someone using a telephone. You talk directly to the other person without anyone else listening in. Telecommunications works in a similar way by sending messages directly from one device to another, which makes it faster and more secure than other methods of communication.
