ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Points of the compass

Alright kiddo, imagine you are standing in the middle of a big open field. You want to know which way is which, right? Like where is north, east, south, and west?

So, there are four main points of the compass: north, east, south and west. North is the direction towards the top of a map or towards the North Pole. East is the direction towards the right of the map, South is the direction towards the bottom of the map, and West is the direction towards the left of the map.

Now, let's make it simple. Imagine you have a pizza in front of you with 8 slices. Each slice has its own name, and those are the in-between points: north-east, south-east, south-west, and north-west.

To find out which way is north, you can use a compass. A compass is a little tool with a magnet that always points to the north. So, if you have a compass in your hand, you can know which way is north and then find out which way is east, south or west.

In short, compass points help us to know in which direction we are heading, just like a map helps us navigate to our destination.
