ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Police ranks of the United Kingdom

Okay kiddo, imagine you're at school and different children have different jobs. Some children are responsible for taking care of the playground while others are responsible for making sure everyone is safe while walking to and from school. Similarly, police officers in the United Kingdom have different jobs and are given different titles based on how important their job is and how much responsibility they have.

The lowest rank is called a Police Constable. They are like the school children responsible for taking care of the playground. They are responsible for patrolling the streets and keeping the peace. They are recognizable by their blue uniform and are the most common rank in the police force.

The next rank is called a Sergeant. They have more responsibility than a Police Constable and are like the school children responsible for making sure everyone is safe while walking to and from school. They are responsible for supervising and overseeing the work of Police Constables. They wear a white stripe on their shoulder to indicate their rank.

Above Sergeants are Inspectors. They are like the school children responsible for making sure everyone is doing their jobs and following the rules. They are responsible for overseeing the work of Sergeants and Police Constables. They have more decision-making authority and usually handle more complex cases. They wear two white stripes on their shoulder to indicate their rank.

Higher up the ladder is the rank of Chief Inspector. They have even more authority and responsibility than Inspectors. They are like the school children responsible for supervising all the other kids at school. They usually handle important cases and may be in charge of running a team of police officers. They wear three white stripes on their shoulder to indicate their rank.

The highest-ranked police officer in a specific area is called the Chief Constable. They are like the principal of a school. They are responsible for running the entire police force in a particular area, like a city or county. They are responsible for making big decisions and deciding how to use resources to keep their area safe. They wear four silver-to-gold stripes on their shoulder to indicate their rank.

So, just like at school, different children have different jobs and responsibilities. Similarly, police officers in the United Kingdom are given different ranks depending on their job and how much responsibility they have.
