ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Political views of American academics

Okay, kiddo. So you know how grown-ups have their own ideas about how things should be done, like how to decorate the house or what to have for dinner? Well, these ideas can also be about bigger things, like how the country should be run or what laws should be made. When adults talk about these big ideas, we call them their "political views".

Now, some grown-ups who like to think and write about these ideas also happen to work at universities, which are places where people go to learn about different things. These grown-ups are called "academics". And because they're really interested in these big ideas, they often talk and write a lot about their political views.

But the thing is, not all academics have the same political views! Some might think that the government should be really involved in people's lives and help them out when they need it, while others might believe that people should be responsible for themselves and the government shouldn't get involved too much. Some might think that everyone should be treated equally no matter where they come from or what they believe, while others might think it's important to stick to certain traditions or beliefs.

So, when we talk about the political views of American academics, we're really talking about all these different ideas that they have. Some people might study or work with academics who agree with them, while others might have to listen to ideas they don't agree with. But that's okay, because it's important for people to think about and discuss different ideas so that we can learn and grow as a society.
