ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Port scan

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a big house with many rooms inside. Now imagine that your friends want to come over to play hide and seek inside your house, but they don't know which rooms are open and which are closed. So they have to go around and knock on each door to see if it's open or not.

Well, a port scan is kind of like that. Except instead of rooms, we're talking about doors, and instead of friends, we're talking about a computer trying to connect to yours. In computer talk, a "door" is called a "port," and each port has a number associated with it.

So let's say your computer is connected to the internet, and someone wants to see if they can connect to it. They might use a special program called a port scanner to knock on each of your computer's "doors" (ports) and see which ones are "open" and which ones are "closed."

If they find an open port, then they might try to use that to get into your computer and do bad things. That's why it's important to have good security measures in place, like a firewall, to block unauthorized access to your open ports.

So, to sum it up, a port scan is like someone going around knocking on the doors of your computer to see which ones are open, and potentially using that information to try to get into your computer and do bad things.
