ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Service scan

Imagine you have a big box with lots of keys in it. And you want to open different doors with these keys. But how do you know which key opens which door?

That's where a service scan comes in. It's like you are trying all the keys to see which one works.

In the digital world, computers also have "keys" called port numbers. These port numbers are used to open "doors" or access different services like email, web browsing, or file sharing.

A service scan is when a computer tries to connect to each of these port numbers to see if the door is open. If the port number responds or accepts the connection, it means the service is available and the computer can access it. If not, the door is closed and the computer cannot enter.

This is useful for computer security experts who want to check if a computer or network is secure. By performing a service scan, they can see which doors are open and if any of them are vulnerable to attacks.
