ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Portmap

Okay kiddo, you know how when you want to play with a toy, you have to go get it from its toy box? Well, computers also need to know where to find the things they want to play with, which are called services.

Portmap is like a map that helps your computer find the toy box for each service it wants to play with. Just like you need to tell your mom or dad which toy you want to play with, your computer tells Portmap the name of the service it wants to use, like playing a game or listening to music.

Portmap uses this information to help your computer find the right toy box (or port on another computer) where the service is waiting to play with it. Once your computer finds the right port, it can start playing with the service and having fun!

Without portmap, your computer wouldn't know where to find the toy box for each service, so it would be like trying to play with a toy that's not there. That's no fun!
