ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Post-nominal letters

Post-nominal letters are letters or acronyms you add after your name, like Mr., Mrs. or Ph.D. They show that you have achieved something or belong to a group or organization. It's like a special code to tell people you have done something special.

For example, if you finish college, you might be allowed to use the letters BA after your name. If you become a doctor, you can use the letters MD. If you become a lawyer, you can use the letters Esq. after your name.

People like to use post-nominal letters because it shows what they have accomplished or what they are a part of. It's a way of telling people that they belong to a group, like being a part of an organization.

So, if you see someone with a bunch of letters after their name, don't be scared, they're not secret codes, they're just showing off what they've achieved or what they're a part of.
