Postage stamps and postal history of the Confederate States

Okay kiddo, have you ever gotten a letter or a package in the mail? And did you notice the small sticker on the top right corner? That sticker is called a postage stamp.

Now, a long time ago, during the Civil War in America, there were two sides fighting each other. One side was called the Union and the other side was called the Confederacy. The Confederacy had their own government and they needed to send mail just like the Union.

So, they had to make their own postage stamps. They put a picture of a famous person or symbol on the stamp and people could buy them to put on their mail when they sent it.

But making stamps was hard for the Confederacy because they didn’t have the same resources as the Union. They had to use different materials than the Union and they didn’t have as many printing presses to make them.

The Confederacy also had a tough time delivering mail because there was a lot of fighting going on, and the mailmen had to travel through dangerous areas to get the mail to its destination. Sometimes, the Union would stop the mailmen and take the mail, so the Confederacy had to come up with sneaky ways to get their mail through.

That’s the story of postage stamps and postal history of the Confederate States. Isn't that interesting?
