Potential energy

Potential energy is energy that an object has because of its position. For example, a ball on a shelf has potential energy because it is not moving and is higher off the ground than if it was on the floor. When the ball is dropped and it hits the ground, that potential energy is released and transformed into kinetic energy, which is the energy of movement.
