ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Potentially unwanted program

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen those ads on your computer that ask you to download certain games or software but they look a bit too good to be true? Well, sometimes those things are what we call potentially unwanted programs or PUPs for short.

You know how sometimes your mom or dad tells you not to talk to strangers because they might not be very nice? Well, PUPs are like the strangers of the internet. They might look nice and fun, but they can actually be bad for your computer.

PUPs can do lots of things that you don't want. They might slow down your computer, show you ads all the time, or even give other bad people a way to get into your computer without you knowing.

So, it's always important to be careful and make sure you know what you're downloading. If you see something that looks too good to be true, it's best to ask your mom or dad for help. They can make sure you're not downloading anything bad by checking if it's a PUP or not.

Remember, just like not talking to strangers, it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to downloading things on the internet!
