ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Poulaine

A poulaine is a fancy word for a pointy shoe that people used to wear a long, long time ago. They were popular in the 14th and 15th centuries in Europe.

Imagine a shoe that looks like a regular shoe but with a very long, pointy toe. It's like the toe of the shoe is super stretched out. The poulaine would go much further than your normal toes and could be as long as 20 inches!

People would wear these shoes to show off how rich and fancy they were. They would make them out of expensive materials and decorate them with all kinds of fancy things like gold, jewels, and fancy embroidery.

But why did they wear such long-toed shoes? Well, some people think it was a fashion statement, just like people wear trendy clothes today. Others believe that they wore poulaines because they thought longer toes made them look taller and more important.

Walking in poulaines must have been quite challenging! The long and pointy toe would make it hard to walk or run quickly. Imagine trying to climb a tree or play a game of tag with those shoes!

Over time, poulaines became so ridiculously long that they started to get in the way. People would sometimes have to tie the tips of their shoes to their legs just to walk without tripping. Eventually, these shoes fell out of fashion and disappeared.

Today, poulaines are mostly seen in artwork, books, and historical exhibitions. They remind us of a time when people had very different ideas about what is "stylish" and "fancy."
