Precordial thump

Okay, imagine you're playing with some toys and you accidentally drop one down a hole in the ground. You really want to get that toy back but you don't have any tools to get it out.

That's kind of what happens in someone's heart when it stops beating. Doctors can't use tools to make the heart start beating again, so they sometimes use something called a "precordial thump."

Basically, a doctor will use their hand to hit the chest really hard, right over where the heart is. This kind of jolt can sometimes make the heart start beating again on its own. It's kind of like giving the heart a surprise party to wake it up.

Now, it's important to note that this is not a very common or preferred way to treat someone in cardiac arrest. Doctors will usually use other methods like CPR or defibrillation. But in some cases, when those other methods aren't available or aren't working, a precordial thump might be used.
